Camp Ax, our Teen/Young Adult Retreat weekend, took place in Austin Nov. 16-18. Campers are burn survivors aged 17-22, who have aged out of Camp David. Several Austin firefighters (now Hill Country Firefighters Burn Fund) stepped up 4 years ago to organize all the retreat’s activities as well as fundraise to make it happen. This year the fun included an early morning yoga class, creating a three-course Thai dinner at H-E-B Central Market’s cooking class, scaling the rock walls at Crux Climbing Center, and racing go-karts at Circuit of the Americas Formula One track. They were supposed to go ziplining, but the weather turned out too cold and wet. There’s always next year! instead, they just stayed in the common room playing games and laughing and talking. Several of our campers are in college or have recently graduated and are out in the “real” world. One of our attendees described the impact of the weekend: “The hardest part about camp is always leaving this family. I feel like no one understands me the way they do. I only get to see them a couple times a year and when I am with them I feel so complete.” We feel the same way!
